
Five rounds into the 2026 FIM Hard Enduro World Championship, we sat down with the FASTOS MR74 rider in the Abestone paddock to talk about the components that never make the highlight reel, and what happens when they stop working.
Mario Román has been off the bike for about twenty minutes when we find him. He has just finished fifth at the Abestone Hard Enduro, round five of the championship, the last rider to complete all six laps, after spending most of the afternoon in a three-way fight for the final podium position with Teodor Kabakchiev and James Moore.
Román was still very proud, to get a another consistent top 10 this season
"You look at the photos from today and you see the rocks, you see the rider, you see the bike," he says, gesturing at a Moises, our photographer, walking past. "You never see the linkage. But that's the parts that needs more attention." referring to how happy he was on his bike
The Components That Never Make the Highlight Reel
It is an unusual thing for a rider to want to discuss, although we brought up the topic for other reasons. Most post-race conversations run on lines, mistakes, fitness and fuel. Román wants to talk about bearings, the sealed, unglamorous components buried in the linkage, the swingarm, the steering stem and the wheels, which do the hardest mechanical work on a hard enduro motorcycle and receive almost none of the credit.
His comment was straightforward, and he makes it without overselling it.
"A bearing is never going to win you a race. But it can definitely make you enjoy it. I've seen it happen to many riders and I would rather not be that guy, who has a horrible couple of hours racing."
Five rounds across five countries have given him an unusually broad dataset to draw on. The 2026 calendar has moved from a wet French hillside to three days of Portuguese heat, to post summer dry Idaho dust, to Swedish forest that changed underneath the field mid-race, and finally to Tuscan rock. Each one attacks the machine in a completely different way.
Alestrem: Two Contamination Environments in One Afternoon
Round one in France began dry and dusty. It ended in torrential rain, with conditions deteriorating so badly that the Clerk of the Course implemented a deviation and the classification was ultimately called at Checkpoint Eight.
For Román, that transition is the single worst thing a race can do to a motorcycle.
"That day had everything. It started dusty and it finished like a river. For the rider that's fun, honestly. For the bike it's the worst combination there is, dust first, then water on top of the dust. Now you've made paste, and it's sitting directly on the bearing surface. And there's no moment in the race where you can stop and do anything about it."
He is at his strongest on wet climbs, and he was hauling himself back onto Kabakchiev on the final ascent as the hillside disintegrated. But committing to a climb in those conditions, he says, requires total confidence in the front end, and steering feel degrades long before anything actually breaks.
"When the steering stem is worn it doesn't break. It just goes vague. And on a wet climb, vague means you don't commit. You lose half a second and you don't even know why you lost it. Luck for me, I had all the confidence, I think I was the only rider to go up the final climb clean?"
Lagares: Where Duration Does the Damage
Portugal was the opposite challenge. Extreme XL Lagares runs across three days, the Endurocode Stage on Friday, Extreme Penafiel on Saturday, and the main race on Sunday. Román was third, third and fourth, finishing 5m19s behind Manuel Lettenbichler in the main event. It remains his most complete weekend of the season.
"Portugal isn't about one hard section. It's three days. Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and the bike has to feel the same on Sunday morning as it did on Friday morning. If it doesn't, you can't be consistent, and consistency is the only way you score points at this level."
Long races are rarely destroyed by a single catastrophic impact. They are worn down by an enormous number of small load cycles accumulating over hours, while heat rises and lubrication slowly degrades. And in a multi-day event there is an additional, easily overlooked stress that Román raises unprompted.
"Every time the bike is washed between sessions, that's another chance to push water somewhere it shouldn't go. Nobody thinks about the pressure washer. Over three days, it adds up."
Silver Kings: Why He Thinks Dust Is Worse Than Mud
In June the championship crossed to Silver Mountain Resort in Kellogg, Idaho, rocky climbs and forest sections on a ski resort, in dry conditions, you could feel fine dust hung in the air all weekend.
Ask most riders to name the worst thing for a motorcycle and they will say mud. Román disagrees, and his reasoning comes down to particle size.
"Everybody thinks mud is the enemy. Mud mostly stays outside the seal. Dust doesn't, dust goes in. It's smaller, it moves, and it does it quietly for hours until something is worn and you never noticed it happening."
His main race in Idaho was not what he wanted, and he declines the opportunity to blame anything for it.
"Idaho wasn't my weekend and I'm not going to make an excuse. But the new bike was fine. We rebuilt a bike in the USA, and lucky for Factory Links, S3 and Plews, I was able to assemble a race rready machine"
Forza Orza: The Scenario You Cannot Prepare For
Sweden's first world championship round started dry, then the rain arrived during the main event itself. Román finished sixth, the last rider to complete all ten laps.
"You can be ready for rain. You can't be ready for rain that arrives in the middle of the race. There's nothing to do at that point except keep going and hope the bike is still the same bike it was an hour ago."
Abestone: Pure Impact
Which brings us back to Abestone, and terrain defined by big, hard, square-edged rock in the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines.
"Here the rock is big and it's square. Every hit goes through the wheel, through the swingarm, into the linkage. That's a very small part taking a very big hit, again and again, for more than two hours."
"I was with Teo and James for third almost the whole race. I didn't get it. But to still be in that fight in the second hour with those great riders, the bike has to behave exactly like it did in the first. If it doesn't, you're not racing any more, you're just surviving."
What Is Actually Happening Inside
The engineering behind Román's preoccupation is genuinely interesting, and it starts with a distinction most riders have never considered.
Linkage bearings do not rotate. They oscillate, sweeping back and forth through a narrow arc as the suspension moves. In a rotating bearing, load travels around the races and grease redistributes continuously. In an oscillating bearing, the same small group of rollers absorbs the same load in the same position indefinitely, and the grease never gets the opportunity to move.
"I'm not an engineer," Román says. "But when someone explained to me that this bearing doesn't turn, it only moves backwards and forwards a little bit, then I understood. Same rollers, same place, same load, all day. It's the hardest job on the motorcycle."
That is why specification matters more here than almost anywhere else on the chassis. Factory Links linkage kits, supplied to the championship as Official Bearing & Linkage Partner, use full-complement needle bearings — no cage, allowing the maximum number of rollers and therefore maximum load capacity for a given size. Pins are precision-ground from SAE-52100 bearing steel hardened above HRC60. Collars are hardened, polished and corrosion-resistant, because a rough collar surface will destroy rollers. Dust seals are OEM-spec NBR, and the grease is a marine-grade formulation selected specifically to resist washout.
At the wheels, the Race Series kits use Teflon-coated multi-lip seals, with Factory Links quoting a 40 percent friction reduction against conventional designs — a figure that means little over ten minutes and a great deal over a two-hour Gold Final. At the steering stem, controlled stack height, interference-fit metal-backed seals and dual angular contact geometry all exist to hold preload consistent. Which, translated into rider language, means keeping the front end honest.
The Failure Is Never Sudden
Bearings almost never fail in a single dramatic moment. The sequence is slow and consistent: a seal breaks down, water and debris enter, grease becomes contaminated, friction rises, and that additional friction combined with shock loading and slight misalignment accelerates wear until something finally lets go.
Long before that point, the motorcycle has been signalling. The rear feels harsh over small bumps. It kicks sideways over square edges. Rebound becomes sticky and inconsistent. Corner-exit grip disappears. Something creaks.
And almost every rider misreads it, including, Román admits, himself.
"I've done it. You think the shock is wrong, you're turning clickers, you're talking about revalving, spending money. And the shock was fine the whole time. The linkage was tight and the shock couldn't do its job."
The Same Problem, Just Slower
Almost nobody reading this is contesting a world championship round in Lesotho this month. Román's argument is that the difference is scale rather than kind.
"It's the same thing, just slower. You ride through a river, you wash the bike, you leave it in the garage all winter. Same problem, you just have more time before it finds you."
His advice for club riders is specific, and free.
"Before you pay for suspension work, put the bike on a stand and move the linkage with your hand. It should be smooth and silent. Check the steering stem for a notch. If you find something, you found your problem, and it's much cheaper than the one you were about to pay for."

In two weeks the HEWC packs for the Roof of Africa, round six of the championship, running 24–26 September in the Maloti Mountains. The oldest hard enduro in the world, contested since 1967 at altitudes above 3,000 metres, it is a long, rally-style event.
Asked whether any of this hardware detail will make a measurable difference to where someone finishes in Lesotho, Román is refreshingly unwilling to oversell it.
"A bearing isn't going to put me on the podium. That's my job, and my team's job. But knowing the parts nobody takes a photograph of have been done properly, for me, that's most of it."
